Portlandia and Great Moments in Hipster Bashing

As Portlandia begins its second season tonight, part of me wonders if it is the pinnacle of hipster-bashing video comedy. As a sharable meme, hipster bashing might have outlasted its natural life cycle, but Portlandia continues to provide a high level of cultural commentary thru parody. As much as I’d like to dismiss it, the show doesn’t just say, “Look at these effing hipsters” — it instead makes you wonder, “Will we ever escape from the hipster as a widespread cultural phenomenon [via escaping from ourselves]?”

When Will TV Learn to Properly Bash Hipsters?

2 Broke Girls
CBS

This morning, Grantland brought to your attention All-Americans, a upcoming sitcom co-created by Will Sasso and in development at Fox. The pitch, courtesy the Hollywood Reporter: “A half-hour multi camera comedy that centers on a patriotic and conservative Army Ranger [who] comes home after serving 10 years in the Middle East to find that in the last decade, his brother (the only family he has left) has turned into a liberal, skinny-jeans–wearing, anti-establishment street artist who lives in a hipster neighborhood.” Hipster-bashing? How on-trend!
