TRAILERS OF THE WEEK

Trailers of the Week: Upstream Color, Sound City, Star Trek Into Darkness, and More

By Rembert Browne and Dan Silver at

Sound City (TBD)

Silver: OK, so you’re making your first film. It’s about a legendary recording studio that's hosted such acts as Nirvana, Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, and Tom Petty, and which has since fallen into neglect due to the digital age. How in the world do you book interviews and get rights to all the music? Well, it helps if you're former Nirvana drummer, current Foo Fighters front man, and go-to Satan for Tenacious D Dave Grohl. Because booking Trent Reznor, Tom Petty, Lars Ulrich, and Dave Grohl (wow ... how’d he land that one?) is probably easier that way. But the question of the film’s quality still remains; will Grohl be just another renowned musician stepping behind the camera in hopes of earning their renaissance man/raconteur merit badge? I honestly doubt it. He’s hired some key folks from The Cove, Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos, and Dogtown and Z-Boys to help him through his rookie effort. So in the end, I’m guessing Sound City is going to be my 2013 Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap.

GRADING THE TRADES

Robert De Niro and John Travolta Go Mano-a-Mano

Robert De Niro and John Travolta will co-star in the thriller Killing Season, to be directed by Ghost Rider’s Mark Steven Johnson. It features De Niro as a retired military guy living in a cabin in the woods and Travolta as a European tourist who befriends him; eventually, it turns out Travolta is a Serbian soldier seeking revenge. That actually sounds pretty cool, but let's not forget that the last time De Niro teamed up with a fellow legend with whom he’d never shared significant screen time, it with was with Pacino for Righteous Kill, and we all agreed that was an utter disaster. GRADING THE TRADES

Paul Walker to Try Emoting

Paul Walker will star in Hours, a post–Hurricane Katrina thriller that will be the directorial debut of horror screenwriter Eric Heisserer (The Thing, the most recent Final Destination). Walker will play a man trying to keep his newborn daughter alive in an abandoned New Orleans hospital. Just some top-notch casting here: When you think of an actor with the expressive abilities to translate the fear and confusion that gripped the city after Katrina, of course you think Paul Walker. Grade: D [HR]
