LOOSE ENDS

Afternoon Links: Ryan Murphy Throws an Intellectual Property Theft Slushee in the Faces of Innocent A Cappella Groups

By Tess Lynch at

Ryan Murphy and Jason Blum are taking on a remake of The Town That Dreaded Sundown, which surprisingly has nothing to do with sundown towns. Or a cover-song thief who comes in the night and yoinks your version of “Baby Got Back”: Singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton joins the list of unhappy Glee cover-song-stealing victims. At least Murphy will be empowering women by casting one as American Horror Story’s next “enigmatic” villain and catering to Jessica Lange’s every fabulous whim (“the best designer gowns ever made”).

Katy Perry's Roamin' Heart ... and Other Horror Stories From This Week's Tabloids

John Mayer & Katy Perry & Adam Levine: Katy Perry went to Adam Levine's annual Halloween party and the two were flirting nonstop. "Adam was touching and hugging Katy affectionately while they did shots together for a half hour, even though his girlfriend model Behati Prinsloo was at the party too. It was kind of uncomfortable." Perry is show-business buddies with Levine, who is also BFF with Katy's rumored beau, John Mayer. Mayer once dated Jessica Simpson, whom Levine was once said to have tooted and booted.

"Adam texted Jess that he 'needed space.'" WHAT? "Then he avoided her calls. She phoned him several times, but he didn't answer." While Katy and Adam's flirtation is probably innocent, there's no doubt that she knows a potential fling with Levine is her ace in the hole should John Mayer's wandering eye and life-ruining dick get the best of John and Katy's relationship.

Just When You Thought the Emmys Got It Right ... the Sad State of the Outstanding Reality-Competition Category

By Emily Yoshida at

As our own Andy Greenwald noted earlier today, fans of Important Television didn't have too much to whine about this morning after the 2012 Primetime Emmy nominations were announced — the lists were surprisingly well-balanced, with popular favorites like Modern Family right up there with critical darlings Girls and Louie, and realistically, that's probably about how things should be, right? (I'm assuming all Community fans have stopped reading by now.) So, huh. This is weird. Is there anything left to get irrationally angry about?

Yes, yes there is! Here are your 2012 Outstanding Reality-Competition Program nominations:

About that New 'Goodie Mob' Song on The Voice Last Night

By Rembert Browne at

A long-winded analogy:

You know when you have a friend who lives out of town? The friend from high school you made a ton of memories with? But then you lose touch with him for four or five years. And then, out of nowhere, you get word that he might be visiting town in a few weeks. And then you get really excited and tell all your current friends that this person is awesome and that he's going to win everyone over. And then the old friend tells you he's going to show up on Tuesday morning. And you prep yourself for Tuesday morning. But then he shows up Monday night. And instead of you introducing him to your friends, he arrives early and goes out and makes a scene for all to see. It's not a bad scene, it's not a great scene, but you hear through the grapevine that it was a scene nonetheless. And when you finally see your old friend, he's completely different from what you remember. It's not bad, it's just different. Oh, and your friend is wearing gold-plated armor.

The Kanye–Kim Kardashian Apocalypse ... and Other Horror Stories From This Week's Tabloids

US

Kanye & Kim K: "They were acting like a couple of kids" as they hung out on the floor piano in FAO Schwartz famous from Big. "It had been West's idea to have the store clear out customers so they could visit a few in-store boutiques — like the Angry Birds shop — undisturbed. As Kim playfully tried on costumes for West's amusement, more and more fans realized the superstars were in their midst, and began chanting her name. West, as famous for his ego as his talent — 'really dug it.' For him it's great to hang with someone who's an equal." Equally down with furs and fame-whoring, yes. "The new romance is the result of months of hot pursuit by West, sparing no expense to win the woman who calls herself 'the ultimate doll.' Conveniently, the knight in mink-lined armor arrived just as the damsel, 31, has been feeling like the dating equivalent of 'a leper,' with guys too freaked out to approach her." Kanye is smitten. "He thinks she's his Beyoncé!" They went to see The Hunger Games. "Not wanting the evening to end — or perhaps trying to woo her into a sleepover — West played to Kim's famous sweet tooth," buying her ice cream, which apparently worked; "she spent the night at his place" and emerged with a visible hickey. They lunched the next day, "where West downplayed his self-centered image over truffle pizza. He's actually a really good listener." They went clothes shopping and each paid. "Kim can pay her own way and she's not riding his coattails. He loves that she's a powerful business lady." HE FUCKING LOVES IT. "She was with cowardly guys like Reggie Bush, who was obsessed with what his teammates thought, and Kris, who didn't want her to act too strong. But Kanye loves her Kimness. She's great the way she is and if people hate on them, he'll only like her more."
