College Basketball Weekend Preview: Duke Goes to New Jersey, and Michigan Gets Gloriously Slow

Before we get going, I want to announce that I'm taking nom-nom-inations for the 2012-13 All-BeefyBulky Team. I was inspired to do this after watching Nebraska's Andre Almeida do battle in a losing effort against Creighton last night. At 6-foot-11, 314 pounds, the Brazilian Almeida is a man of some size, and the eye is immediately drawn in his direction when he's on the floor. Like the elderly couple entranced by the painting of Kramer, we cannot look away.

I was going to put together my own All-BeefyBulky team, but frankly, I haven't done the legwork. The country's elite teams are stocked with perfect physical specimens of varying height at every position, and my mental Rolodex couldn't produce five worthy BeefyBulksters. And this is not something you want to rush. The BBs represent the real America, and we can't risk choosing the wrong men. So far, my All-BB team has just two members:

College Basketball Team Previews: The Royal Blues — Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, Duke, and North Carolina

By Shane Ryan at

All this week, we'll be running college basketball team previews for the 20 (or so) Most Interesting Teams. Today we present the Royal Blues, and then we'll work our way up to the Big Guns.

Is it strange to anyone else that the five most legendary teams in college basketball all wear blue? When you look at the four winningest programs in history, it's blue all the way — Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, Duke. Turn to national titles, and UCLA emerges as the fifth major power. (Yes, Indiana, you would be the sixth. And yes, you're red, but you can't be mad; you're the best team in the country this season, and the national title favorite.) This year, the Royal Blues are ranked from third to 13th, and since the NCAA landscape resembles 2009-10, when the absence of truly dominant teams opened up the race, they all have at least a hint of a title shot. We begin with last year's champs.

PROSPECTING

Rebel Yell: Breaking Down UNLV's Mike Moser

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

May 7, 2010: UCLA coach Ben Howland bids freshman Mike Moser farewell.

Howland: “I’m supportive of him finding a program where he will have a chance to play more minutes than we envision he will have here.”

Moser: “I feel it is necessary for me personally, to make a move somewhere else so I can play.”

Nov. 26, 2011: Moser plays 31 minutes, scoring 16 points and grabbing 18 rebounds — outplaying potential lottery picks John Henson and Tyler Zeller — while helping UNLV knock off top-ranked North Carolina.

Four days later, he scores 34 points and grabs 10 rebounds in a double-overtime win at UC-Santa Barbara, bringing his team’s record to 8-0 on the season.
