NBA Shootaround: The Dwight Howard Blockbuster

The Shootaround crew returns to give their quick takes on the Dwight Howard blockbuster.

The Age of Empire

As I slowly progress toward the end of my life, I find myself more and more impressed by the (seemingly limitless) tenacity of the Lakers franchise. They are the only team in the NBA who is continually like this; they are the only team who flat-out refuses to have an average, uninteresting roster. In 35 years, they've been under .500 just three times. They never rebuild. They always go for it. I'm not sure if Dwight Howard will ultimately prove to be a massive upgrade from Andrew Bynum (and I can even imagine a scenario where it makes things worse), but there's no way you can argue over the intention behind this move.

It feel weird saying this, but it's true: As it turns out, The Decision was great for the culture of the NBA. It shoved the idea of building a super-team directly in everyone's collective face, and now there's no other way to be ultra-competitive. If you want to run with Miami, you have to mortgage practicality and simply acquire three of the league's best 25 guys by any means necessary. There are now two incredible teams in the West and one and a half incredible teams in the East (until Derrick Rose plays again, Chicago is on the fence). The NBA has instantly evolved from a sport that wasn't even that interesting in February to a sport that is totally worth following in August. I suspect L.A. may still lose to Oklahoma City in the playoffs, but at least there's something to daydream about until that happens. I'm ecstatic this trade happened. — Chuck Klosterman

Fantasy Fantasy Football Week 14: The Playoffs Begin!

It's time again for the most important weekly feature on the Internet: Fantasy Fantasy Football. Throughout the NFL season, we'll be evaluating five fantasy football gurus as they tell us who to start and sit each week. Using a highly flawed method based loosely on mathematical principles, we'll attempt to reveal the one true football prophet. (Here's how it works: A pick counts in their favor if he ends up in the top half of the weekly scoring leaders. There are four categories — QBs, RBs, WRs, Defense/Special Teams — and points are awarded on a 5-1 scale in each.) The experts are:

Fantasy Fantasy Football: A Look at the Experts' Week 1 Picks

"Don't trust anyone."

I've received that advice from more than a few of people in my life. My father would even add an extra "including me!" right before he snatched my allowance and raced to his car. It's gotten to the point that I'm even suspicious of innocent conversations. These days, I choose to spend my time peering through the blinds of a window and scowling at strangers.

But there's one thing even I can trust: numbers. Numbers never lie. They prepare you for life's difficult decisions. For instance: When you're thinking of dating someone, know the average length of his or her previous relationships. Before you agree to buy candy from an enterprising child, analyze the candy bar company's expense reports to determine the real worth of the cause. If a friend needs help moving furniture, calculate the money you'd lose by volunteering, along with the probability of injury, and compare that to what you'd make staying home and selling an "antique" on eBay.

And friends, before you go adjusting your fantasy football roster on the advice of a man from the Internet, know his track record!

B.S. REPORT

B.S. Report: Matthew Berry

Vick
Matthew Emmons/US Presswire

You knew this was coming: my annual fantasy football preview with ESPN.com's Matthew Berry. I can't believe we were able to land him as a guest — he keeps such a low profile this time of year. Anyway, we broke down crucial questions like, "Should Mike Vick be the first overall pick?", "When should you take Chris Johnson?", "Can you be in three leagues without neglecting one of them?", "Are there particularly good Vegas odds for a 2011 passing/rushing/receiving yards leader?", and "Is there a special fantasy football league just for ESPN employees who say 'Ohbytheway' too much?" We also broke down the best QBs, RBs and WRs, argued about a few sleepers/stayaways and basically tried to hit as many names and topics as humanly possible in 70 minutes. And as always, I played up a couple of guys whom I have no intention of actually drafting just because I know people from my three leagues will listen to this podcast.
