It's hard to believe that we haven't sent out a postcard
for almost three weeks. But what a great three weeks it has been. We said a sad farewell
to Nice on 12/19 and drove north into the French Alps. Within 45 minutes we had left the
sunny coast and were in the snow covered mountains. Then on to Geneva to meet up with our
good friend Janet. After a little mix-up at the airport (nobody told us that there is both
a French side and a Swiss side to the airport) we finally met up and jumped and cried for
joy. It was the very best Christmas present. Sherry decided to set off a few sparklers in
front of the airport to celebrate. But unfortunately, they turn out to be fairly
impressive rockets. People were running for cover, certain that the airport was under
attack. We quickly retreated and drove off before the Swiss army had time to mount a
counter attack.
We spent the next couple of days in Lusanne and Montreaux on Lake Geneva doing our last
minute Christmas shopping. Then on 12/23 we headed for Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. Zermatt
is a place of which fairy tales are made. No cars are allowed and the narrow snow covered
streets are filled with skiers, shoppers and people celebrating the holidays. We had a
great Christmas with lots of presents and fun. We then skied in the afternoon and ended
the day with a great Christmas dinner at one of the finer restaurants in the village. The
village is like a constant party and every day the streets, bars and restaurants are
packed with people into the early morning hours. On New Years Eve everybody setoff their
own fireworks and the sky was lit up for almost an hour. There are people here from all
over the world and we have made friends with many.
We were suppose to leave here on January 2 and go to Italy, however OZ has a broken fuel
pump which, because of the holidays, cannot get fixed until next week. So we are
"stranded" here for the next few days. Oh well, we'll just have to put up with
these inconveniences.
The attached picture of us and Janet was taken on one of the ski slopes. That's the
Matterhorn in the background.
A prosperous and happy new year to all.
- Ken, Sherry, Piper and Skyler
