We fell in love with Venice. We walked the narrow streets
and bridges. We discovered the little shops and restaurants. We toured the glass shops of
Murano. We even danced down the middle of an empty San Marco plaza to the midnight bells
of the campanile.
Last Tuesday we left Venice and headed south for Florence (Firenza). OZ must know that we
are parting ways soon, because about 15 miles north of Florence, she gave a loud bang and
stopped. Turns out that the clutch broke, but we managed to get her towed into a small
town and found a nice hotel. The next day we taxied into Florence and stayed near the
Duomo at a nice small hotel. The picture was taken before Michelangelo's David at the
Academia Museum.
With a deadline of January 23 to meet our friends in Rome, we picked up OZ on Thursday and
headed south to Sorrento. Sorrento is a small resort town that sits on high cliffs
overlooking the clear waters of the Mediteranian. The narrow streets are lined with
sidewalk cafes and shops showing locally produced inlaided wood creations. Fortunately,
due to it being the off season, we have most of the town to ourselves and were able to get
a grand hotel overlooking the water for half the normal price. Over the next few days, we
plan to tour the Amalfi coast, take a boat to the island of Capri and go to Pompeii.
