2/22/98, Zambezi River - Day 203

Our African experience began on Friday, February 20 in Nairobi. We arrived in the morning then met up with Sherry's mom Barbara and our nephew Wyatt at the Nairobi airport a few hours later. It was a wonderful moment when we met up and we all hugged and kissed. After not seeing each other for so long, we were all so looking forward to this moment.

Then it was a quick dash to the famous Norfolk Hotel in town.  The Norfolk became our home-away-from-home in Africa and we would always return there to re-supply and rest before the next leg of our journey.

After a quick change, a nap and storing some things for later, it was back to the airport to catch a plane to Harare, Zimbabwe.  There we had an overnight, then the next morning caught a smaller plane to Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls. We then crossed north into Zambia and took a canoe trip on the Zambezi River. We saw hippos rearing up in the water to warn us off (we got the message) and an elephant (above) real close up on the bank whereby we disembarked from our canoes, momentarily forgetting the crock infested waters and had a chance to get up close and personal 40 ft from an adolescent male. When he flared his ears and snorted we ran for the canoes and watched him from the shore as he worked his way through a tree eating and browsing it down to broken limbs. Tiring of the audience in the canoes he retreated and we began the final paddling leg of our all day on the river. We were fried, tired and completely satisfied.
