After the Masai village we continued our drive up to the Nogorogoro crater. This time we circled the rim of the crater to the north end where we stayed at a lodge. The views for this side were awesome. I will never forget the sunsets with the last slivers of light casting long shadows in the bottom of the crater while the orange light simmered off of the lakes below. In the Ngorongoro crater we saw pink flamingos at the lake's edge and lunched by a pool of peering eyes belonging to several hippos submerged in the water. We saw a 2 ton rhinoceros (named John) plod in a straight line across our path, secure in the knowledge that even if we had been in his way, he would have had no problem plowing right through our Land Cruiser. Nogorogoro is its own world. Many of the animals never leave the crater and so it is possible to see many types and numbers of animals in a relatively small area.
