4/27/98, Patong, Thailand - Day 257

We've been a week in Thailand on the island of Phuket. We arrived just before the start of the Thai New Years celebration. Tradition has it that by cleansing oneself in purified waters all of the bad things in your life will be washed away. However, this ancient traditon has changed over the years until now it is merely the biggest all day water fight in the world. The streets were packed with people and vehicles. All were armed with huge pump water guns, water buckets, hoses and anything else that will propel water. Even the cops got into the action on both the giving and receiving end. Everything and everybody got completely drenched. We armed ourselves with large water canons and joined the fun. However, the best weapon was the 2 ton elephant that stood on the side of the road next to a tank of water, spraying everyone that passed by.

We've scuba dived and gone elephant riding and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and beaches. Tomorrow, Saturday we're getting on a houseboat for a few days to explore some of the caves and small islands at the north end of the island. After that we're off to Bangkok.
